U.S. Code Section 508
This Web site conforms to the guidelines defined in U.S. Code Section 508 of the Workforce Investment Act.
WAI-AAA 1.0
This site complies with the Web Accessibility Initiative's Web Content Accessibility Guidelines Level AAA.
Access Keys
All of the access keys work on every page. Browsers with better CSS support, such as Netscape 6.2+ and Mozilla 1+, will display the access keys after the link when set to the ADA enhanced styles. Otherwise, the access key is identified in the link's title attribute (which will appear on a mouse over).
Access Key Definitions:
- access key 1: Kentucky Virtual Library home page
- access key 2: Skip to Navigation
- access key 3: Table of contents
- access key 4: Search
- access key 5: KYVL for Kids
- access key 6: Virtual Reference Desk
- access key 7: Kentucky Digital Library
- access key 9: Comments/Suggestions
- access key 0: Accessibility Statement
- access key ?: How to Use KYVL
Browser Support for Access Keys:
- Firefox 0.9+, Mozilla 1+, and Netscape 6.2-7.1: Alt+accesskey executes the link.
- Internet Explorer 5.5+: Alt+accesskey focuses on the link. You will need to press Enter
- Opera 7+: To activate access keys press Shift+Esc and then Control+accesskey. You will need to activate the function each time you use it.
- Mac users [and Opera users] should substitute the Control key for Alt.
- Apple Safari 1.2+ has access key support (see browser for details).
Relative Links
These links aid navigation in text-only browsers such as Lynx. For others:
- Mozilla 1.1+: select View » Show/Hide » Site Navigation Bar » Show Only As Needed.
- Opera 7: View » Navigation Bar » Auto.
- Firefox 1.0+ supports relative links via the relative link toolbar browser extension.
- Internet Explorer 5.5-6.0 supports relative links via relative link tool bar add-on.
- Firefox before version 1.0 and Netscape 6.2+: not supported.
Structured Semantic Markup
This site uses structured semantic markup. On this page, JAWS users can skip to the next section by pressing Alt+Insert+3.
Alternate Styles
Alternate styles, which can be used in conjuction with standards-compliant browsers, have been included in this site. Users can determine which style, including various ADA enhanced styles, works best for their situation. To switch styles, go to our ada styles page.
Styles have been defined for alternate media. For example, standards-compliant browsers reformat and optimize the page for print.
Use of Non-W3C Technologies
Macromedia Flash: Recent versions of the Flash authoring tool can create documents accessible to some screen readers. Flash files on this site have been made as accessible as the Flash authoring tool (at the time the file was created) allows. Because Flash files require more bandwidth and load slowly with modems, Flash files also have HTML equivalent pages. This is our best effort to balance the multimedia possibilities of the Web while maintaining the broadest accessibility possible. See Macromedia's Accessibility page for more information.
Adobe Acrobat PDFs: PDF documents can be accessible if the are stuctured properly. PDFs on this site are constructed from structured text files and can be read aloud with Acrobat Reader 6 and after. If the nature of the document does not demand the use of the PDF format, HTML has been used. See access.adobe.com for more information.
